To Steam or Not To Steam

Part 1

There are so many articles out there on the benefits and the horrors of yoni steaming. There is no wonder that many may be confused on the matter. I want to focus a few main contraindications so that you are more informed when choosing whether or not to steam and which kind of practitioner to choose.

Being that I am not only a practitioner but also a Yoni Steam Instructor, I find it just as vital to get to the truth of the matter. Yoni steaming a lifestyle for me, so taking care of something so sacred is very important to me. As a healer, I feel the womb space deserves special attention and care.

I count my blessings that I have the pleasure of partnering and working with a gynecologist to help me improve my practice. She’s shared with me that she can recall countless stories of women seeking help after receiving a yoni steam that was too hot. Incorrect temperature tops the list of potential hazards that occur during a yoni steam. It is never a good idea to have the steam at temperatures that could cause burns. You should not feel discomfort or pain when steaming. If it’s too hot, let your practitioner know, don’t just tolerate it thinking that’s the way it’s supposed to be. A good practitioner is one who understands this and has no problems keeping the temperature at a safe operating level.

Next on the list are women with IUD’s. IUD’s are listed as a contraindication as well even though there is a way around it in some cases. It is possible to steam with an IUD if you can obtain a doctor’s clearance first. This is very important for several reasons. First, is to remember, yoni steaming is an assistive or complimentary holistic practice and is not to take the place of a physicians expert advice. Second, this is to make sure that steaming itself or any herbs used during your session won’t interfere with the effectiveness of the IUD. Heat is of concern as well when it comes to copper IUD’s.

Last, Steaming is a not recommended during pregnancy either, for obvious reasons. Pregnancy is a precious time where a woman’s body is expending a lot of energy creating life. While steaming should be a warm and pleasant experience, heat is still a concern as steaming does warm the body. We want to keep the body temperature normal and well as not to cause any hormonal imbalances from the use of any herbs.

In conclusion, yoni steaming has many benefits (of which I will share in my next blog) but it important to understand the contraindications and why they are in place so that you can make an informed decision when choosing a practitioner. I recommend practitioners who understand the medical side (anatomy) of things and/or also work with physicians that understand the benefits of steaming as a complementary practice.
